Moms Who Get Massages Are Happier

Now there are even more reasons not to skip your spa day. It’s been officially proven that moms who get regular massages and spa services are actually happier people!

It’s no secret that spending the day in the spa will lead you to feeling more Zen. Whether you’re enjoying a massage, relaxing facial or one of our luxury head-to-toe body treatments you’re bound to feel so relaxed that you could actually fall asleep (and we don’t blame you).

But it turns out that it’s much more than a slight snooze that can improve your mood. The effects are a result of the hormone re-programming that goes on in your brain. Massages are proven to decrease the levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and actually increase serotonin and dopamine. This basically means that your stress hormones are naturally diminished while your mood and relaxation hormones get a nice, natural boost.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood, appetite and digestion. It’s also believed to help social behavior, sleep, memory, and sexual desire and function. Serotonin is synthesized in the brain and the intestines, and it’s theorized that low serotonin levels contribute to depression and anxiety.

Dopamine is associated with the reward center of the brain. It’s the neurotransmitter that makes you feel giddy when you fall in love, positive when you complete a task, and is the chemical activated by many drugs. Low dopamine levels are associated with a lack of motivation, low energy, and the inability to focus.

How it works?

Massage helps activate these hormones and a relaxed state however, it may take a little time to feel the effects. In the initial response to touch during a massage or body treatment, the sympathetic nervous system is activated — so a quick massage can help athletes amp up for an event. After about 15 minutes, the parasympathetic response kicks in, this is where you will start to benefit from the true relaxation state due to the release of hormones. Moms should plan at least one hour of massage to truly relax, and advise your therapist that relaxation is your primary objective.

As a busy mother your body is in a constant state of stress both physically and mentally. Next time you’re thinking about skipping that massage, think again. Massage will not only help you relax but will give you a natural boost of serotonin and dopamine.

Whether you’re a mom yourself or you know a mom who could benefit from a spa treatment, The Woodhouse Day Spa of North Bethesda has just the thing for you! Many of our body treatments and facials also include massage.
